In “The Shape of Amphibian” series, Feng Zhixuan starts with known terrains to create entirely new landscapes. He prints a three-dimensional map where the oceans are removed, but the undulations of the mountains are preserved. The crisscrossing ravines are imprinted on sand and then cast with melted aluminum. The continents are disrupted, flipped, reassembled, and the gaps are filled with resin to represent the oceans of this “new continent.”

Feng Zhixuan recreates the process of continental formation that took place millions of years ago using mediums that are familiar to him. Throughout the rolling and imprinting of the map, the physicality of the artwork is preserved.
