“Interface” series depicts the webpage interface showcasing Tibetan artifacts from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s website. The artist meticulously uses ink painting to portray details such as the navigation bar, labels, text descriptions, and images of the artifacts, emphasizing the standardization and homogeneity of the digital world. One is left to reflect on the regulation and control behind cultural exchanges.
The artwork depicts an owl fossil discovered in northeastern Tibet, which lived approximately 6 to 9.5 million years ago during the late Miocene epoch. The artist uses the form of traditional Chinese landscape painting to introduce themes such as time and death, which differ from those typically associated with landscape scenery. By linking “Tibet” and “fossil,” the piece merges two different temporal layers: human civilization history and Earth’s natural history.
